How Does the Qibla Finder Work?

The Qibla Finder uses the Haversine formula to calculate the great-circle bearing from your location to the Kaaba in Mecca, Saudi Arabia. The Kaaba is located at coordinates 21.4225°N, 39.8262°E. By using your device's GPS or the coordinates of your selected city, we calculate the exact angle you need to face for prayer. This calculation takes into account the curvature of the Earth, ensuring accuracy regardless of your distance from Mecca. The result is displayed as a compass bearing in degrees, where 0° is North, 90° is East, 180° is South, and 270° is West.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is the Qibla angle calculated?
The Qibla angle is calculated using the Haversine formula, which determines the great-circle bearing between your location and the Kaaba (21.4225°N, 39.8262°E).
What is the Qibla direction?
The Qibla is the direction that Muslims face during prayer (salah). It points toward the Kaaba, located in the Masjid al-Haram in Mecca, Saudi Arabia.
What is the distance to the Kaaba?
The distance varies based on your location. We calculate the great-circle distance (shortest path over Earth's surface) from your position to the Kaaba.
Why does my compass show a different direction?
Magnetic declination (the difference between true north and magnetic north) can cause slight variations. Our app accounts for this to show the true Qibla direction.
Does the app work offline?
The mobile app works offline once you've loaded your location. The web version requires an internet connection for initial location lookup.
